North Central Academy hosts reading workshops by award-winning Michigan Author Jeffery L. Schatzer in celebration of National Reading Month.

Mancelona, MI – North Central Academy welcomes award-winning Michigan author Jeffery L. Schatzer on March 8, 2017. Mr. Schatzer is noted for creating unique characters that inspire learning and turn reading into a fun-filled adventure. An avid student of history, Jeffery brings the past to life in quirky and entertaining ways.

Mr. Schatzer has won numerous national and international awards for creativity. He was honored to have his book The Runaway Garden selected by the Library of Michigan’s Michigan Reads program as its One State, One Book picture book in 2010. His stories are recognized for strong moral values and positive life lessons and themes.

Mr. Schatzer’s visit is one of several events planned to celebrate National Reading Month at North Central Academy. Students in grades K through 12 will participate in workshops catered to their grade level. Workshops are an hour in length and will take place between the hours of 9:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. A special Parent/Student reading and writing conference will take place in the evening, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Grades K-3: Reading and Writing for the Fun of It
An inspiring program for readers of all ages. Reading and Writing for the Fun of It stimulates and encourages young readers to seek out the things they enjoy and use them as a springboard to build a life-long love of reading and writing. Simple story structure and word choice are highlighted. This program is based on the adage: "Find that thing you love to do and do it." Jeffery L. Schatzer uses stories (such as the Runaway Garden) and writing examples geared to specific audiences to bring ideas to life.

Grades 4-5: Story Structure Development – The Underground Railroad

This program shows graphically how stories are constructed. A variety of plot concepts are discussed. The program includes thoughts on narrative style, development of plot twists, and the application of surprise. As a supplement to the teaching of writing skills, this program is an adventurous journey into the writing process that provides intellectual challenges for eager writers.

Grades 6-12: Rock the Read, Roll to the Write

An examination of grammatical elements in pop music lyrics (NOTE: Lyrics are carefully chosen to avoid inappropriate content.) A variety of grammatical constructs are examined, such as metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, alliteration, assimilation, etc. Additionally, lyric writing is reviewed and projects are assigned that demonstrate the application of rhyming patterns and lyrical structure.

Parent/Student Reading & Writing Conference: Simple Steps to Promote Academic Achievement
Parents and students will learn tips that emphasize reading to, with and in front of children to promote academic achievement and encourage education and life skills. Parents and students will be given data, examples, and coaching tools to implement a greater desire for learning. All are provided from an interesting and insightful perspective.

North Central Academy unveils renovated Corey Auditorium at the Winter Music Celebration


Mancelona, MI – February 23, 2017
North Central Academy presents the annual Winter Music Celebration concert at the newly remodeled Corey Auditorium at 5055 Corey Road, Mancelona, MI. This all-ages event is free of charge and open to the community. A ceremonial ribbon cutting will take place at 6:00 pm., with the concert starting promptly at 7:00 pm.

With the help of community members, parents and student volunteers, Corey Auditorium received a well-deserved facelift. The space which has held countless community events since it’s construction in the early 2000’s, was graced with fresh paint, new fixtures and an updated sound system just in time for the Winter Music Celebration event.

The Winter Music Celebration concert features students in grades 3 through 12, performing songs by artists such as Stevie Wonder, U2, Freddie Mercury and Pentatonix. There will be a special extended performance by the highly entertaining "Dark Matter" percussion ensemble. Dark Matter won the coveted Queen's Float trophy for their AC/DC inspired performance at the 2016 Kalkaska Trout Festival parade.
